Springtime is Flea Territory

Perth is finally starting to warm up, which we are eager for, but if you’re a pet owner you should be looking out for a small, unwanted, pests. Our beloved pets may be at risk of their nemesis – fleas. Unfortunately along with the warmer weather comes the small, yet nasty animal-loving fleas. They may seem insignificant, but they are the main cause of skin disease in our pets. Symptoms include excessive itching, weeping sores and scaly skin. If that wasn’t enough, these bloodsucking critters can introduce tapeworms to your pet’s body.

Characteristics of a Flea:

  • Generally between 2-7 mm in length
  • They are brown in colour with an oval shaped, flat body
  • Feed on warm blood, which is why they are attracted to your dogs & cats
  • Most active in warmer weather
  • They can leap significant distances

Yes, fleas are present all year round, but they are most aggressive in spring, which is generally when their numbers are soaring. This is why you need to take precautions, like washing your animal’s bedding and sleeping area regularly. If you notice any irregular signs of scratching, make sure to check through your pets fur as soon as possible. Additionally keeping your lawn freshly mowed, and vacuuming the house regularly will keep these nasty little pests at bay.

Have you noticed the signs of a potential flea infestation on your perth property?
We are trained Pest Control Technicians with over 45 years experience in the industry, you can trust us to safely remove these unwanted pests without harming your pets or family. Call our team today on 9209 2030 for an obligation free quote.

How We Tackle Termites.

Are you avoiding pest control treatments because you’re worried about the chemicals and the effects these might have on your family & pets? Well, have you also considered the harm that unwanted pests will do?

No one wants termites, cockroaches, spiders, rats or other critters roaming throughout their home, but no one wants to be poisoned by the chemicals either. With BP Direct you get the best of both worlds - treating & protecting your home from termites while ensuring the health and safety of your family.

We use 3 brands of termite treatments; Termidor, Biflex and Exterra.

Termidor

Termidor consists of a number of carefully selected and individually optimised ingredients to ensure a high quality product, which has a significant influence on the overall performance.”

We’re an Accredited Termidor Applicator & we use Termidor for the following reasons:
  • Long-term residual control
  • There’s no effect on soil microorganisms, earthworms and plants
  • Fast elimination of termite activity
  • Superior soil binding and transfer characteristics when compared to other products
  • Low dose, water based, non-repellant

So how does it work?

After our team of experienced pest controllers have conducted a thorough inspection of your property, we will then apply a termite treatment around the foundations of your property. When termites come in contact with the Termidor, they are instantly infected and unknowingly take this back to their colony, thus infecting more termites who have not even come in contact with the Termidor treatment. Termidor is non-repellant, which means the termites cannot detect the treatment enabling the process to take effect quicker and faster.

Biflex

Biflex has been approved by the Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority and is relied upon by over 1 million Australian homeowners.

Why we chose Biflex?

  • It’s insoluble in the soil and won’t be leached away by rain or watering
  • The treatments will not create health concerns for your family or pets
  • Creates a protective force field around your home, to keep out termites
  • The active ingredient is modelled on the effective insecticide the Pyrethrum Daisy.

How it works

We conduct a thorough inspection of your property first before applying any form of treatment. If we can see signs of termite activity, we will then apply the Biflex treatment around the outside of your property using either an injection or trenching method to ensure the treatment reaches the soil.

Exterra

Exterra is an in-ground termite station, that is safe for your family, pets and the environment.

Why do we use & recommend Exterra?

  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Long Term, Effective
  • Family-safe
  • ‘Focus Termite Attractant’ - a natural & non-toxic additive used within each station, drawing the termites straight to the baiting station and away from inside your property.

How does Exterra eliminate termites?

Exterra baiting systems are designed to create an interception zone around your property, to prevent a termite invasion. In the case where termites are already active on your property, we can use above ground stations to draw them out quickly & effectively.
Termites are most active and destructive during the summer and warmer months, but don't be fooled by winter and assume they disappear. Yes, termites tend to dig down deeper into the ground in search for warmth, but they are still active.

So before termites become a problem on your property, call the BP Direct team on 9209 2030 and protect your family home from a termite infestation in the summer.

Don't shrug off pest control just because it's winter.

There is a general perception in society that
pests don’t hang around in winter, and
that there is no need for pest control during
the colder months — This is not the case!

Yes while some pests do back off throughout our winter months, the majority of unwanted pests stick around looking for food & shelter on your property. So while you’re occupied thinking about which hearty winter dish to cook for your dinner guests, or which movie you’re going to watch tonight while cuddled up on the couch in your uggs, rodents, cockroaches and possums (just to name a few) are making a nest within your roof, walls or outside garage to shelter from the storms.

With that said, let’s run through the most common pests to be on the lookout for during winter, and our tips on how you can prevent them taking over your home or business.

Possums

Whilst laying in bed, have you hear the loud scattering of feet inside your roof at night? Just like mice and rats, possums also seek shelter and comfort within your roof and outside shed, entering your property through cracked/loose roof tiles and gaps in the foundation. Not only are these guys extremely loud at times, but they also stain your walls and ceiling with their potent urine and feces.

What to do:
  • Replace any cracked roof tiles, or gaps in your walls/roof.
  • These guys are protected animals so please don’t harm them!
  • Use baited cages that will not cause any harm to the possum and then release them into the wild — try using banana or apple to lure them in.
  • Call a professional to assist with the safe removal of the possums on your property.

Cockroaches

These little buggers, in our opinion, are the most common of all unwanted pests, as we find them in the majority of Perth homes all year round. Cockroaches are extremely filthy critters and can transmit disease easily, so considering they scurry all around your home, through your kitchen where you prepare your meals, and on the floor where the kids play, they could be spreading diseases with them without you even being aware.

Our Tips:
  • Store all your food and open packets in tightly sealed containers - cutting off their food source.
  • Keep an eye out for feces and traces of cockroaches under the sink, around the bins and inside the kitchen cupboards.
  • Eliminate, by calling BP Direct, to conduct a professional pest control treatment, which is harmless to your family, kids & pets but highly effective towards the removal of cockroaches within your property.

Mice & Rats

Just like us humans, mice and rats seek warmth, shelter & comfort during the colder months of winter. As they are constantly searching for food, this increases the possibility of mice and rats dominating your home, and rodents are well-known for carrying diseases that could be of serious harm to your family. These furry creatures are stealth in their everyday movements and can make it hard to notice their presence but here are a few things you can do to help eliminate them from your property;

  • Store all your food in tightly sealed plastic or glass containers - cutting off their food source. Avoid fabric or cardboard containers that their sharp teeth can chew straight through.
  • Keep pet food outside. Mice & Rats are drawn to pet food, especially biscuits — keep these outside in a plastic container.
  • Keep your backyard and garden clutter-free, to help eliminate possible nesting areas.
  • Eliminate, by calling BP Direct, to conduct a professional pest control treatment. While our treatments are non-toxic to your family, kids & pets, they are highly effective towards the removal of mice and rats within your property.

Millipedes

Millipedes are the little black worm-like creatures that often curl up into a ball when discovered. These little pests seek for shelter inside your premises during the rainy months and feed on compost vegetation, decaying leaves or organic matter mixed with soil. While millipedes may generally be harmless to humans, they are attracted to light and soon become garden pests causing damage to your seedlings, and defend themselves by secreting chemicals from the pores along their body.

Our tips:
  • Clear and garden beds containing leaf matter to eliminate their food source.
  • Seal up any gaps around your property that can potentially be used as an entry point to inside.
  • Prevent an infestation, by calling BP Direct, to conduct a professional pest control treatment on your property.

Snails

Oh, snails! What pests these guys are. The leave slimy trails all over your plants and pavement and eat through your mail. Unfortunately, unlike most other pests, snails love winter and come out from hiding during the cold/rainy days.

Preventing methods:
  • Pellets. Store bought snail pellets are somewhat useful as a temporary solution.
  • Pick them up and remove them from your property, slowly depleting their numbers.
  • Most people think crushing them is the solution, except the mature eggs, can still survive an later hatch.
  • BP Direct offer safe and family friendly pest control treatment options for all your slimy snail concerns.

All of the above tips and tricks are purely prevention methods, and as we have all experienced at some point, it's just not that simple to remove unwanted pests once they have taken refuge on your property. The well-experienced team at BP Direct offer non-toxic pest control treatments that can help to eliminate all your unwanted pests. Call us today on 9209 2030 to further discuss your options and keep your property safe this winter.

Know what you are buying into

Before buying a new home, you need to know that you and your family are protected from any nasty surprises. BP Direct’s pre-purchase pest inspections give you all the essential details you need to know about your potential purchase, so you know whether it really is your dream home or just a pest infested nightmare. We understand this might feel like just another hoop you have to jump through before getting the keys, but trust us when we say you’ll thank us later.

What's really behind the walls?

This prerequisite results in a pre-purchase pest inspection report that assesses the overall condition of the property you are looking to purchase. The report will point out trouble areas in the house, like rotting wood infested by termites, and any other areas in the home that are in desperate need of pest control.

There’s a very high chance that you personally will have overlooked the presence of unwanted pests throughout the property while touring the home. This is very common and easily done during home opens, especially with homes that are older or those that have hidden spaces where unwanted pests can easily hide. Another significant benefit of pest inspections, as a quality professional service like BP Direct, will find trouble areas that potential home buyers may have missed.

What is included in the inspection?

The experienced pest control team at BP Direct undertake a thorough visual inspection of the property, in search for signs of termites or any other troublesome pests. As well as looking for the pests themselves, our inspectors are also looking for any signs of damage and any conditions that are favourable to possible pest activity.

We will inspect:

  • Inside roof cavities and sub-floor areas
  • Backyard and gardens
  • Interior of the property
  • Exterior of the property, and
  • All surroundings of the main structure.
Once we have conducted our inspection, we will provide you with a detailed report of our findings and recommended treatment options for any issues we may have found.

How long does an inspection take?

Of course, the length of each inspection will vary depending on the size of the property and surroundings. We like to allow 1.5 - 2 hours for a general pest inspection because you don’t want these inspections rushed, you want a thorough, detailed inspection to ensure nothing gets missed.

The experienced, licensed and qualified team of pest inspectors at BP Direct have got your back. Before jumping head first into purchasing a property, call us on 9209 2030 and let us have a gander through first. We guarantee to use the latest products available to deliver a fast response treatment and a result you can trust every time.

Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite

Are you questioning whether or not you are dealing with bed bugs in your home?
Maybe you’re heading on holidays soon, and you can help but be concerned hearing all those horrid stories about hotel rooms. Well, BP Direct Pest Control Perth are here to give you some advice on what to look out for when it comes to these nasty pests and what you can do to eliminate them from your property right away!

When You Arrive

Before you jump onto that plush comfy looking hotel bed, put your luggage in the bathroom. Bed Bugs are rarely found in bathrooms, due to the tiles and lack of hiding space. Now suss out the bed, the pillows, the curtains, and the furniture. What do you look for?

Blood Smears and Fecal Stains

Bed bugs are the masters at hiding out of sight, but not quite so clever at covering up their footsteps. One of the biggest signs of knowing if you are dealing with bed bugs is if you find little blood smears and fecal stains on your bed sheets or even on your pj’s. These stains will appear if recently fed bugs get squashed by you in the middle of the night. A good indication of this is if the fecal stains on your sheets look like a felt tip pen has bled through into the fabric.

Bite Marks

Bites can appear anywhere on the body. They more often than not appear on areas that are exposed while sleeping, like your arms, legs, hand & face. Bed Bug bites do look very similar to other insect bites, so they are hard to determine.
The most common signs and symptoms include:
Bites grouped together in a small area, occurring in a line or zig-zag pattern.
Burning sensation to bite area could look like a rash or hives.
Flat or raised areas that become inflamed, red & itchy or even blister.

More signs of bed bugs

With these splatters being a good sign to investigate for bed bugs, be sure to keep a lookout for little white lines along furniture or other places. These white, lumpy lines may look like dust or other types of fibers, but in fact, they could actually be eggs or nymphs (which are baby bed bugs).

As bed bugs grow, they shed their skin, so if you see little flaky particles on your sheets, clothes or spots where those stains are, we would suggest getting something done right away as this is a sign that the population of bugs in your home is growing larger and larger.

Where Else?

Typically, you will find that bed bugs have their hideouts close to their source of food. But, the more the infestations grow, bugs tend to be a bit adventurous and travel to somewhere while they are not feeding. Bed bugs are incredibly flat so that they can fit into the most peculiar of places such as picture frames, electrical outlets, carpet edges, behind window or door moldings and baseboards.

Bugs have been found on the stitching of an armchair, inside wood furniture like night stands, dressers, bed heads and even bookshelves. One thing you should know about bed bugs is that they love cracks and crevices of joints between pieces of wood and found in the head of a screw.

If by any chance you happen to think you are dealing with bed bugs yourself in your home, whether you have spotted a few stains on your sheets or furniture, or if you know for a fact that you have seen bugs somewhere, then give us a call. BP Direct Pest Control Perth are the bed bug specialists, and we can eliminate any problem you may be encountering. Give the team a call today on (08) 9209 2030.

Autumn Bugs

With autumn here and winter around the corner, you need to make sure you maintain your home for two good reasons. The first being to make sure you plan to for the cooler months ahead, and secondly, to prevent any nasty pests entering your home. The team here at BP Pest Control want to provide you with some advice on what you can do to prevent these critters from coming in and how we can help eliminate any bug problem you may be having.

During this in-between season, you will notice that the pests that will try to invade your home will be mice, rats, ants, cockroaches and fleas. You will find that the roofs and ceilings of your property will the most frequent targets these types of pests will try to break into. The reason being is that the ceiling cavities are a warm place to take shelter and to nest. But listed below are some areas that you should maintain to keep your house pest safe.

Pipes and Drains
As the cooler months are approaching, so will the rainy weather. Insects such as cockroaches are attracted to moisture and excess water. So, a poorly maintained downpipe or gutters are very attractive to these types of bugs. So we suggest checking your pipes regularly for leaks and to repair any damage seen on your channels as soon as you possibly can to prevent these critters from entering.

Bedroom
The bedroom is a place to investigate for critters. If you keep a lot of next season's clothes folded away in your wardrobe, we recommend you to go through and check for signs of damage and wash all of those clothes and if you need to store any, store them in sealed bags.

Another problem area in the bedroom is the bed with bed bugs. This pest is all year round, so we suggest every season to clean and vacuum the bedroom thoroughly and regularly, wash all bedding regularly and always inspect your furniture for any signs of damage.

Kitchen
The kitchen is known to be at most risk of a pest problem. This is due to the amount of food located in just one room of your house. As pests need a place for shelter and food, they will primarily target this room of your house first. So we highly suggest that you store food in air-tight containers. Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink for extended periods of time. Regularly empty the rubbish bins and clean all aspects of the kitchen, including the bench-tops sinks, cookers, fridges and all other surfaces.

Garden
Although it may not be a perfect weather to go out in the backyard to garden, it is crucial that you keep branches and shrubs trimmed and not too close to your home, so it prevents an easy entrance for bugs to break in. Keep any form of compost and trash a good distance away from home and ensuring that bin lids are on and secure.

These are some of the tips that you can do to prevent pests from entering your home. If you do have a pest control problem, be sure to get in touch with BP Direst Pest Control today. We can help strategize and eliminate any pest that you are dealing with.

Summer Pest Control

The warmer weather has started to arrive which means, its time to start protecting your home from an invasion of pests from entering your home! Although the weather is beautiful, summer does, unfortunately, come at a cost with bugs reproducing more frequently, and infestations are more likely to occur because they love this warmer weather. Here at BP Pest Control Perth, we want to provide you with some helpful advice that can eliminate and prevent bugs from entering your home.

One of the best types of defence from an infestation occurring is simply prevention. The reason you may find an invasion of insects or rodents in your property is that of three things; food, shelter or water. Eliminating these elements from the equation will make the bugs not want to live in your house. Sources of food such as garbage bins, dirty dishes or food just generally left out will become an attraction for unwanted guests.

Here is a list of things that you can do to help with your situation;

-    Keeping your house tidy, clean and sanitised throughout is crucial when it comes to situations like this. The cleaner your property is, the more unattractive your home becomes to bugs.
-    Make sure to clean all surfaces such as countertops, tables and other similar surfaces to ensure that no crumbs are left laying around or residue of food for ants to come and find.
-    Please clean all of your dishes right after a meal or at the end of each day. If you do them by the end of each day, keep them hidden by having them placed inside of your dishwasher ready to be washed.
-    Ensure you remove full rubbish bags inside of your home to the bins outside at all times, this is the biggest hotspot for pests to try and enter in.
-    Any form of cracks in the walls or ceiling needs to be patched up as soon as you possibly can to prevent an easy entry for pests to get in.
-    Bathrooms, laundries and kitchens regularly have a lot of moisture on the walls, floors and ceilings due to steam, etc., so it is highly recommended that you make sure to wipe down these areas to make sure these rooms are kept dry to prevent bugs such as mosquitos, flies or cockroaches from moving in.
-    Although we highly recommend you getting a professional out to eliminate bugs, if you do insist on doing it yourself, please make sure that you are eliminating the entire colony or nests of bugs. If you are only getting rid of the one or two pests you spot in your house, you are not resolving the entire problem.

Summer is a fantastic season to be in, especially in Perth. However, it does have its downside to it because of all the pests that thrive in this weather. To the average homeowner, it can be a struggle dealing with eliminating and preventing of insects and rodents from entering your home. If you would like a professional to help you prevent or eliminate pests, our team of experts can do the job. So get in contact with us or click the link below to see what services we offer.

Where do Rats come from?

Like many homeowners, you have unfortunately found yourself with a rodent infestation and Rats have invaded your home. Before you even begin to solve the problem, you may be wondering: how did these rats even get into my home?

Where do rats come from?
You have to consider what attracts rats,  rodent or pest for that matter which love any sources of food and shelter. Your home is climbing, so there isn’t much you can do to change that. However, you can definitely take the required steps to keep the food in and around your home from attracting rats or any unwanted pests.

What attracts rats?
Rats have a great sense of smell, so the best way to keep them from detecting food in your home is to seal it up as much as possible.

Consider these tactics:
Everyone loves living in Perth. Our warm sunny days, beaches, trees, organic gardening and outdoor patio restaurants are the envy of the rest of the country. There’s no doubt that Perth is a great place to live.

Guess what? All of the things that make Perth so appealing to people also make it an ideal habitat for our local rat and pest control population.

Most rats in Perth are a species known as roof rats (Rattus rattus). These smaller white rats are different from Norway rats, which are a larger breed found throughout most of the rest of Australia. Roof rats prefer our hotter, warmer climate and live in trees, bushes and come out during the summer months. Because they don’t burrow like their northern cousins, they go looking for warmer places to nest in the winter which are often your roof.

If you have a rat or mouse infestation in your home, you might notice these critters scratching in your roof, scurrying across the floorboards, or climbing up a walls or pipes and living in your tree's. These are nocturnal creatures, so all these activities probably happen at night. If you’ve noticed rodents in or around your home, your first step is to try to figure out exactly what type of pest they are. Knowing the differences between rats and mice can help you determine the most appropriate eradication tactics.

Do you have rats in your home or yard? For most people, the very thought of rats in the attic or running through your kitchen is enough to cause nightmares and even wanting to leave their own home.

The good news is that when you learn more about rat behaviour and what attracts rats to your home, it’s easier to decide what to do next. As your local pest control company, we can help you with all of your pest control problems.

We love getting rid of your pests as much as you want them gone!

Common Western Australian Spiders

Summer is here and so are the barbeques, campouts, and the great outdoors! Whether you’re out in the bush or relaxed at home we encourage you to keep a watchful eye out for one the nastiest and most dangerous pests that you can encounter; spiders. Though many of our native inhabitants aren’t life threatening, we still have quite a few dangerous spiders in Australia, such as the funnel web, white tail and the red back. We highly recommend hiring a professional when dealing with any unfamiliar spider, as the results could be a matter of life or death.  The list below will help you identify the common, spiders you’d find around your home or office in Western Australia:

1. Redback. These spiders can be found anywhere from bushland to your garden shed. Their bright red streak along their black bodies make them easily identifiable. Please take extreme care when cleaning your yard or outside furniture, as these pests spin their webs in any crevice they can find.  Please call a professional when you encounter this species, as they’re highly venomous.

2. Huntsman. Large, brown, and hairy spiders. They’re commonly found around houses, and in the bush. While they might be big, they’re harmless, and definitely more afraid of you than you are of it.

3. Trapdoor. These spiders may look aggressive, but they’re more of a retreating species rather than an aggressor. You can identify these spiders by their large black bodies, unlike the Redback, their limbs are thick and short. These pests live in burrows, if you find one on your property call a professional. These spiders make up for their lack of venom with a nasty bite.

4. Black house spiders. These little pests are probably the most common spider you’ll come across in your home, they make their webs in window frames. Generally timid and harmless these spiders can give a nasty bite with a small amount of venom, enough to make you a little nauseous.

So this spring and summer keep your eyes peeled for these nasty little pests, and if the need arises we highly recommend calling a professional when dealing with any animal that may be considered venomous. Have a fun and safe summer with BP Direct Pest Control!

Taking Care of Business: Rodent Edition

As a business owner, presentation is vital to growth. You have to work long hours and spend time earning a positive place in the community. But now, with the evolution of social media, just one bad review can send your business spiralling. That’s is why keeping your customers happy, and content, is basically the golden rule of business. In most cases, small businesses will deal with the odd bug here or there, but if you’re in the restaurant industry you’re dealing with a dangerous intruder, Rodents.

If that doesn’t scare you, here are some facts about rats ands mice:

  • Just one pair of rats/mice can reproduce so rabidly you can find yourself with up to a population of 500 in just 12 months.
  • They can nest anywhere, as long it is dark and dry, for example, attics, basements, under floors, wall cavities, and anywhere else they might be able to find in your building.
  • They carry diseases, that when spread to humans, can be life-endangering.

  • Their teeth are incredibly strong and very useful when it comes to gnawing through your walls and cables.
Prevention

Keeping the rodents at bay can be intimidating, but it is manageable with the right precautionary methods, for example cleaning all food debris away and keeping the office clean. Make sure there are no stacks of boxes inside the office, or piles of files, that could be made into nests. Do regular inspections of the facility to ensure that there are no gaps or openings in the pipelines where the rodents might be able to enter.

If you find yourself with an infestation too large to handle, discreetly, yourself, please contact us. We are professionals as we are trained to safely and securely remove the nest and its inhabitants.

Bees and Wasps Services

Springtime is here, and so are troublesome bees and wasps! Although it may seem refreshing to see the little black and yellow critters in your garden, pollinating your flowers, they come at a cost. Bees can be extremely dangerous to people with allergies, and without an EpiPen it can become deadly. Wasps are even worse, they’re naturally aggressive and territorial insects that like to nest under roofs and (unfortunately) near humans. Whether you’re allergic or not, both wasps and bees leave very painful stings when agitated. That is why we recommend hiring professionals when it comes to dealing with an infestation of these pests.

Our process is simple, yet effective; we firstly thoroughly inspect the property to give a full report on the problem, so we can isolate how to deal with your specific infestation. Secondly, we use our own equipment to deal with insects. This can be a time consuming job, especially when the bees/wasps have built a hive within a wall cavity, so we appreciate your patience during the process. We then have to remove the hive without initiating an aggressive swarm. As soon as we have cleared the area and removed any traces (so that the Bees or Wasps can’t follow their old tracks) we give a personalized list of precautionary products or actions to reduce further infestations. We always recommend not leaving any food out, as all pests are attracted to what they may think is a new food source.

We urge you to call us when it comes to Bees or Wasps. Book now to get your pest problem under control!

Springtime - The Flea Season

Perth is finally starting to warm up, which we are eager for, but if you’re a pet owner you should be vigilantly looking out for a small, unwanted, guest. Our pets may be at risk of their nemesis – fleas. With the warmer weather come the small, yet nasty animal-loving bugs. They may seem insignificant, but they are the main cause for skin disease in pests, with symptoms like itchiness, weeping sores, scaly skin and unwanted smells. If that wasn’t enough, these bloodsucking bugs can introduce tapeworms to your pet’s body.

Fleas may be around year round, but they are most aggressive in spring, when their numbers are soaring. This is why you need to take precautions, like washing the animal’s bedding and sleeping area regularly. If you see any signs of scratching, make sure you get it check as soon as possible. It also helps to keep your lawn freshly mowed, and vacuuming the house will keep the little pests at bay.

However if you think that you may have an infestation, do not hesitate to give us a call. We are trained professionals and know exactly how to remove the pests quickly and efficiently. Just give us a call and we will happily help you with the problem.

Mosquitoes - The More You Know!

Nothing beats a day out at the beach, or a relaxing barbeque at the park, that is until your legs and arms begin to itch and you wake to find your body covered in little red spots! The dreaded mosquitoes have arrived. With all of the rain that Perth’s been receiving and Summer being right around the corner, we thought that this would be a good time for some mosquito facts!

Why Do Mosquitos Bites Itch?

Trick question! Mosquitos don’t bite, they suck! Their mouths compile of a long, almost syringe like, tube that are used to penetrate the preys’ skin and suck out blood. The itch that arises is a reaction your body provides to the foreign mosquito saliva, penetrating our blood vessels. Basically, our immune system sends histamines to clean the area, which can be quite irritating. The more you scratch, the more histamines are sent. So it is actually the histamines that your body provides that causes the itching, not the mosquito.

Male Vs Female

The Female mosquito is the only one that actually feeds on blood; which is used as a protein source for the egg development. Meanwhile males feed on fruits and nectars, and they’re silent. The horrific, high pitch hum you hear is a female, not a male. The males’ lifespan is about 10 days, while the female can live up to 3 weeks and can lay 300 eggs at a time. The males will hover near a female for a chance to mate and for safety.

How To Keep Mosquitoes Away?

Here are some DIY methods for keeping mosquitoes at bay:

  • Remove or make sure to cover any pools, or ponds. This is will decrease the chance of eggs being laid nearby your home.
  • Put up insect screens on your windows, so you won’t have to worry about them flying through the windows!
  • Make sure your lawn is cut and mowed regularly; this prevents any breeding or hiding areas for them.
  • This tip is a little macabre, put out a bowl or dish of soapy water. This will attract mosquitoes that will then drown in the bubbles.
If you’re struggling with a mosquito problem, and can’t find a solution, don’t hesitate to give us a call! We have professionals that have dealt with plenty of mosquito infestations, and know exactly how to get rid of them, and will show you how!

How to Identify Rodent Infestation

Summer is on the way, and with summer come rodents looking for cool shade, essentially, they’re burrowing in your home or office space. Mice and Rats are definitely Australia’s most common pest, as they can be found in any climate, incredibly agile, and once they find a suitable home they’re very difficult to get rid of.
Mice and rats are notorious for food damage, they’re constantly getting into food stocks, leaving droppings, and destroying packaging. Rodents also have the nasty habit of transferring disease, like food poisoning, ratbite fever, tapeworms, ringworm, and more.
If you’re unsure about whether or not you may have mice or rats, here are a couple of signs to look out for (asides from seeing them running across your floorboards) :
Smudge marks may occur on rafters, pipes, walls, and other parts of structures. These marks are the combination of oil and dirt rubbing off mice’s fur along frequently traveled routes.
You might be able to find gnawing marks on doors, ledges, in corners, in wall material, on stored materials, or on other surfaces wherever rodents are present. Fresh groups of wood shavings, insulation, and other gnawed material may be a sign of a serious problem.
If you have either mice or rats, there are often sounds. You would be able to hear squeaking, running across surfaces, and gnawing within walls or in attics.
If you’re finding any random shredded material when in your basement, attic, or shed, these may be nests.
