When You Arrive
Before you jump onto that plush comfy looking hotel bed, put your luggage in the bathroom. Bed Bugs are rarely found in bathrooms, due to the tiles and lack of hiding space. Now suss out the bed, the pillows, the curtains, and the furniture. What do you look for?
Blood Smears and Fecal Stains
Bed bugs are the masters at hiding out of sight, but not quite so clever at covering up their footsteps. One of the biggest signs of knowing if you are dealing with bed bugs is if you find little blood smears and fecal stains on your bed sheets or even on your pj’s. These stains will appear if recently fed bugs get squashed by you in the middle of the night. A good indication of this is if the fecal stains on your sheets look like a felt tip pen has bled through into the fabric.
Bite Marks
Bites can appear anywhere on the body. They more often than not appear on areas that are exposed while sleeping, like your arms, legs, hand & face. Bed Bug bites do look very similar to other insect bites, so they are hard to determine.
The most common signs and symptoms include:
Bites grouped together in a small area, occurring in a line or zig-zag pattern.
Burning sensation to bite area could look like a rash or hives.
Flat or raised areas that become inflamed, red & itchy or even blister.
More signs of bed bugs
With these splatters being a good sign to investigate for bed bugs, be sure to keep a lookout for little white lines along furniture or other places. These white, lumpy lines may look like dust or other types of fibers, but in fact, they could actually be eggs or nymphs (which are baby bed bugs).
As bed bugs grow, they shed their skin, so if you see little flaky particles on your sheets, clothes or spots where those stains are, we would suggest getting something done right away as this is a sign that the population of bugs in your home is growing larger and larger.
Where Else?
Typically, you will find that bed bugs have their hideouts close to their source of food. But, the more the infestations grow, bugs tend to be a bit adventurous and travel to somewhere while they are not feeding. Bed bugs are incredibly flat so that they can fit into the most peculiar of places such as picture frames, electrical outlets, carpet edges, behind window or door moldings and baseboards.
Bugs have been found on the stitching of an armchair, inside wood furniture like night stands, dressers, bed heads and even bookshelves. One thing you should know about bed bugs is that they love cracks and crevices of joints between pieces of wood and found in the head of a screw.
